I was very skeptical about this one but really enjoyed playing bass on it. I'll vote to keep working on it, and get our horns involved as soon as possible on it.

  • balsama commented on a recording of Song for Bilbao 5 years 10 months ago

Bold fade out by Mahlon. I think it's because he got all pissy at Pete for going into the hits unannounced and didn't want it on the recording.

Sounds great though. I didn't have the simple guitar/sax melody quite right. Fixing that will make a big difference.

  • balsama commented on the session recorded on 5 years 11 months ago

Makes sense. Glad you were able to salvage something from Song For My Father.

  • cordmahl commented on the session recorded on 5 years 11 months ago

Some of the audio for the recordings have problems. Because I was stoned and enjoying Matt’s Xmas gift (whiskey) my engineering skills were not as sharp as normal. Navigating the gauntlet of cables, inputs and outputs on the fly proved to be a challenge. On one tune the sax line wasn’t working. I was able to still bring the sax out through the drum overhead and percussion mics, but that makes for a washy recording and drum heavy...but in the end we still got Paddy’s magic. In aint that funky, to ensure we got the sax, I swapped out what should have been my floor Tom line, but it turned out to be my snare line🤔, so I didn’t have as much control over the finer aspects of the track. Still sounds good though. Next time..

Lot's of really cool stuff here. Pat has some genuine solos going on throughout. The crescendo starting right at 14:00 of Ain't It Funky Now stands out since we all seemed to read each other well there. A+.

  • balsama commented on a recording of Ain't That Peculiar 6 years ago

Wasn't in the mix I guess. I heard Mahlon has a plan though.

  • matthewjbell commented on a recording of Ain't That Peculiar 6 years ago

Timmy, great work on the Marvin melody in the solo.

  • matthewjbell commented on a recording of Ain't That Peculiar 6 years ago

    What happened? Why no keys?

  • balsama commented on a recording of Sun, More, Alive 6 years ago

Crazy Moog drone at 7:40 → 8:35 sounded way cooler in the room, but still cool.

  • balsama commented on a recording of Ain't That Peculiar 6 years ago

    No Yamaha 🥺

  • balsama commented on the session recorded on 6 years ago

Land of nahd is actually a New Mastersounds song, right? Which one?

  • balsama commented on a recording of Move On Up 6 years 2 months ago

    Longest note ever: 7:30-10:30

  • cordmahl commented on a recording of Going Down 6 years 2 months ago

Some sweet licks from Tim in here...

  • cordmahl commented on a recording of Heads Up 6 years 2 months ago

Savor the flavor, cause this will not happen again.

  • cordmahl commented on a recording of Ain't no use 6 years 2 months ago

The last 4-5 minutes of this song is jammin’! We come off the hits (which we pull off well throughout the tune) and Adam slides into a sweet Moog solo and Tim later starts going to town.

  • Anonymous commented on a recording of Heads Up 6 years 2 months ago

    Best jam ever.

  • balsama commented on the session recorded on 6 years 2 months ago

Some super cool stuff going on here. The bass on Ain't no use is outta this world on the fourth "chorus". That's one of my favorite recordings of that song yet. The drums and bass kicking in perfectly at the beginning of Just the Way I Pictured It are 👌. Ain't it Funky Now is cool even though there are at least four different ways that the hits are being played. Nice stuff.

  • Bell commented on a recording of I'll Keep My Light in My Window 6 years 2 months ago

Nice work on the vocals here, James.

  • matthewjbell commented on a recording of What You Won't Do for Love 6 years 3 months ago

Yes! This one's so much fun. We can get Jim singing some of the tunes we've worked on already too... like Ain't No Use and the Ben Vereen number, I'll Keep a Light in My Window.

Good idea here too with posting the music. Very helpful. I'll try to get the horn line down to accompany the trumpet.

Missing recording of O Caminho Do Bem?

  • balsama commented on a recording of What You Won't Do for Love 6 years 3 months ago

Totally agree. Happy to learn anything that anybody wants to sing.

I wasn't really happy with the moog in this take. Oh well. The mix is really good. Guitar and bass sound great. Love the little slide up/down flourish at the end of each phrase. And Mahlon channeling Donald Johnson from Khruangbin.

  • cordmahl commented on a recording of What You Won't Do for Love 6 years 3 months ago

Jim crushing vocals and trumpet...a whole new dynamic. We should do more vocal tunes.

Other favorite part is the ghosty moog interlude jat 3:50...smooth.

  • Jon commented on the session recorded on 6 years 3 months ago

Thanks a ton for hosting. The tones and sound engineering setup you have is amazing — jealous I can’t do this every week. Btw, spelling is “Bryn” and “Jon”. The song titles are great... way better than Music Jam #1.

Didn't we play Move on Up? No recording?

  • balsama commented on the session recorded on 6 years 4 months ago

    Huge ➕1 to Ummh.

  • balsama commented on a recording of Ummh 6 years 4 months ago

This is my favorite recording of this yet. Matt doing some super cool stuff on the guitar. Cousin John holding it down on bass. Sick Moog sounds. Nice work.

  • balsama commented on a recording of Commoner's Swagger 6 years 4 months ago

Lol. Which guitarist starts the descending run two beats early literally every time? This is cool though. Was this the last song that Cousin John came up that we all stuck around for?

  • balsama commented on a recording of Move On Up 6 years 5 months ago

    😊🤤

  • cordmahl commented on the session recorded on 6 years 5 months ago

Great to have TJ back. However, he brought treats from CA. Note to self, when someone who has you by probably 50lbs says...'Yeah, I took a whole gummy and I was fine', think back to the 6/9/18 jam session and say 'oh yeah, that was stupid. I'll go for half.'

  • cordmahl commented on a recording of Move On Up 6 years 5 months ago

This was the beginning of the onset of gummy-dumb. We started at like 127 bpm and end up at 117. I do like the little jam we devolve into come 11:30ish.

  • matthewjbell commented on a recording of The Minx 6 years 6 months ago

This is a great number. I need to learn it on bass too.

  • matthewjbell@y… commented on a recording of O Caminho Do Bem 6 years 6 months ago

Yes. This groove is huge. Adam, you sound great on this one already. We need to keep playing it.

  • balsama commented on a recording of The Minx 6 years 6 months ago

Yeah. The changes themselves are pretty straightforward I think: https://rs62.live/songs/minx

Would probably help for me to listen to the original a few times to get a better feel.

  • balsama commented on a recording of O Caminho Do Bem 6 years 6 months ago

I do like the groove, though.

Yeah, I really really dig this song. There's another change that we never did that just goes up a half-step to the Eb too. And it would behoove us to play the riffs more often (and cleaner). Looking forward to doing this again.

  • balsama commented on a recording of 3:06 6 years 6 months ago

Meh. Don't bother. I dig this song but it's boring unless I learn the proper riffs and chord extensions. Will do before we play it again.

  • balsama commented on a recording of Move On Up 6 years 6 months ago

I didn't realize this was Move On Up when we were playing it. Cool. Should learn that horn line. Also found a cool recording by The Dynamics.

  • cordmahl commented on a recording of O Caminho Do Bem 6 years 6 months ago

The two vocal tracks were tough to mix. Putting the mic to PA speaker doesn't cut it. The mic seemed to pick up a lot of room as well as what's coming out of the PA. With this one and 'John's Son' I really had to mix to the vocal mic, so it's a little tinny and there is a lot of 'room' on that particular track.  Once the vocals were over I cut it out that track and the instruments start to balance better.

I do like the groove, though.

  • cordmahl commented on a recording of The Minx 6 years 6 months ago

Dig this groove. Love the chunking action on both guitars. If we can solidify the changes this will be a great tune to have in the arsenal.

  • cordmahl commented on a recording of 3:06 6 years 6 months ago

Not entirely happy with this mix. It seems loud and thin. I may have another go at it, but then again...there are a lot of tracks from this evening.

  • cordmahl commented on the session recorded on 6 years 6 months ago

A couple mixing challenges. Unfortunately, the Moog was a little hot all night so it sizzles a little on most tracks. Definitely a solid evening though.

  • matthewjbell commented on a recording of Wasp / Behind the Wall of Sleep 6 years 6 months ago

Pete and I don't need much encouragement to play Sabbath.

So far, the tunes we've worked on, if you want to start listening to them...

    WASP/Behind the Wall of Sleep

    N.I.B.

    Sweet Leaf

    Supernaut

    Paranoid

    Fairies Wear Boots

    The Wizard

This is great that you can add links here! The original is groovy. I think I can figure out that bass line.

This. This is what the people want to hear. 💉🐉

  • cordmahl commented on a recording of Incorrigible 6 years 6 months ago
    • Really like the evolution in the beginning of this song.
    • I dig the melody and entrance of the Moog at 6:10
    • Like the shuffle switch at 9ish - although I slog it a couple of times
    • Pete, channeling a little Tony Iommi toward end of the solo around 11:00?
  • cordmahl commented on a recording of Amazing Grace 6 years 6 months ago

A little too close to I-IV-V with the I-III-V, but because we're making America great again, I let it slide.

Any thoughts on the use of tremolo in the mix? Too much? Not too much? Much too much?

  • balsama commented on a recording of Barbary 6 years 7 months ago

Lol. I just listened to this again. I must have been drunk last time I listened to it. I'm sure it was fun to play, by that's about it :)
